I think you'll gain much more support if as part of the plans, you retain provision of residence for future bishops: that after all is the service that seeps from every brick of this building. There are myriad historic buildings across every parish of every county. The key is to retain uniqueness. The spirit of a building is as fundamentally important as the very bricks and mortar they are built of. Removing a building's inherent role automatically renders it significantly more sterile. In spite of the Church Commissioners' extraordinary commercial myopia and cultural philistinism (it's still extraordinary that they've failed to learn lessons from the selling off of so many vicarages, rectories and parsonages at rates that make Gordon Brown's gold sale look prudent), it is absolutely vital that the building doesn't just become yet another pale community centre or museum: it should live and breath the culture that has formed it for generations. Incidentally, I notice the campaign for Rose Caste is keen to stress that it is looking to ensure it remains a See House; in doing so, it gains the support of many more people who care for the fabric, history and spirit of the nation.

A super edition of Portillo's travels with Bradshaw. Beautiful aerial shots of the castle and surrounding land, also of the principal rooms and many of the bishops' portraits. All this and a story about the first Bishop Perowne that even I had not heard before...!

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your comment. I will make sure to keep my eyes open for any reference to the Danks and Misses Snow.

I note from Newsletter 10 that you are working on scrapbooks from the First World War. Please could you keep an eye out for any references to Danks, probably Miss Marion Danks and her brother Martin who lived at Charlton House, just across the road from the Castle.(He kept Hereford cattle in the Park.)
Also, any references to the Misses Snow of the Shrubbery, again just across the road. I think that they were involved with the Castle as a convalescent hospital.
I look forward to seeing you and your work at the FHCHL AGM.
                     Yours sincerely, Sam Danks

There are so many buildings of historic significance going to ruin or being sold into the wrong hands. I think the Trust of Hartlebury Castle and many Trusts throughout the UK are to be greatly admired for the work carried out voluntarily to save our built heritage. Please do not hesitate to contact me should you require any free advice/assistance on CDM Regulation information that may help with obtaining grant funding. I would be more than happy to help. Good luck and I wish you all success for Easter 2012.
